It doesn’t surprise me that so many people find themselves confused as they first try to navigate the world of specialty coffee. Even a term as commonplace as “drip coffee” seems to have layers of meaning.

Don’t despair! I’ll guide you through everything you need to know about drip coffee in this informative article. I’ll explain what it is (and isn’t), why it’s so popular, how it compares to other brewing styles, and much more.

What Is Drip Coffee?

Let’s start with the basics. Drip coffee is any brewing method that involves pouring water over coffee grounds in a filter and letting it drip through into a vessel below. It can be made with a metal, cloth, or paper filter, so drip coffee is often called filter coffee. 

That covers a lot of ground. We typically associate drip coffee with automatic drip coffee machines, but pour-overs, percolators, slow-drip cold brew, and the Costa Rican chorreador are also examples of drip coffee.

It’s just as easy to define drip coffee by what it isn’t. The main alternatives to drip brewing are immersion brewing and pressurized brewing.

In immersion brewing, ground coffee beans steep in water for the duration of the extraction time before being filtered out. The most common example is the French press, but the Aeropress and vacuum pot are also examples of immersion coffee brewers.

In pressurized brewing, hot water is forced through coffee grounds under high pressure, shortening the extraction time and producing a fuller-bodied brew. Espresso machines and Moka pots are pressure-based brewers. The Aeropress fits in this category too.

What Is Drip Coffee Vs Espresso?

Drip coffee is brewed using atmospheric pressure to let hot water drip slowly through ground coffee, extracting flavorful compounds as it passes. Espresso is brewed using high pressure to force water through coffee grounds. To help with this, espresso is prepared with a much finer grind and shorter brew time.

The resulting drinks are quite different. Espresso has a creamier mouthfeel, fuller body, and much more intense flavor, which is why it is enjoyed in very small servings (1 or 2-ounce shots) or diluted with hot water or steamed milk.

What Is Drip Coffee Vs Americano?

An Americano is an espresso shot that has been diluted with hot water to give it a strength similar to drip brew coffee. However, the two drinks are still distinct. An Americano has a fuller body than drip and is capped with a layer of crema.

What Is Drip Coffee Vs Pour-Over?

Pour-over is the term for a drip coffee prepared manually, without the use of a coffee machine. Instead, the barista pours hot water over coffee grounds using a kettle.

This method allows the barista complete control over the water temperature, brew timing, and the pour rate and pattern. It also provides access to a broader number of brewing devices of all shapes, materials, and designs – each with its own flow dynamics and thermal properties.

As a result, a skilled barista can typically tease more complexities and nuance from a great coffee than an automatic machine. This is why pour-overs are favored by specialty coffee lovers and in high-end coffee shops.

How Much Caffeine Is In Drip Coffee?

The caffeine content of drip coffee varies between about 80 and 175 mg of caffeine per 8-ounce cup. The large variability is because the exact amount of caffeine depends strongly on the brewing recipe (coffee-to-water ratio) and type of coffee.

For example, Robusta beans have nearly twice as much caffeine as Arabica beans. Most single origin coffees are Arabica, but you might find Robusta beans in a blend, which will increase the caffeine in your cup of drip coffee.

How Do You Brew Drip Coffee At Home?

To prepare drip coffee – assuming we’re not talking about pour over coffee – you’ll need at minimum an automatic drip coffee maker and the appropriate coffee filter. I also recommend a burr coffee grinder and a coffee scale because it’s more accurate to measure coffee beans by weight than volume.

Determine how much coffee to grind for the number of cups you plan to brew, using our coffee to water ratio calculator if needed. Grind the coffee to medium, add it to the filter basket, and ensure the coffee machine’s water tank is topped up. Program any optional settings, like pre-infusion time or brew strength, and start the brew cycle. Your machine does the rest.

What is drip coffee grind?

Coffee beans for the best drip coffee should have a medium grind size, with some variation from medium-fine to medium-coarse depending on your specific brewing device. Most pre-ground coffee is a medium grind suitable for drip coffee machines, but grinding your beans fresh always produces a more delicious cup of coffee.

Can drip coffee be iced?

Drip coffee can be iced to enjoy as a cold drink. This is done by pouring hot or chilled drip coffee over a glass of ice directly before serving. Preparing a pour-over coffee directly into a carafe of ice for a chilled version is often known as flash brew.

Combining ice with hot drip coffee will dilute the taste and strength of the coffee as the ice melts. To counteract this, you can brew your drip coffee at a higher strength or use ice cubes made from brewed coffee. 

Can you use cold water for drip coffee?

The cold-water version of drip coffee is a specific brewing method called Kyoto-style slow drip coffee. In this brewing process, ice-cold water is slowly dripped over ground coffee for up to 24 hours. The long extraction time is necessary to ensure a complete extraction without using hot water.

What Are The Benefits Of Drip Coffee?

The home drip coffee maker was invented in the 1970s as a successor to the percolator (1). Its use quickly surpassed percolators because it was faster, easier to use, and brewed better-tasting coffee. 

The drip coffee method also has the advantage of being able to brew a larger amount of coffee than many others.

Drip coffee offers the same health benefits as any coffee, thanks to its caffeine and antioxidant content. These include an increase in energy and focus, a reduced risk of certain diseases, and possible aid in weight loss.

Drip coffee made using a paper filter is a healthier way to enjoy coffee if you are at risk of high cholesterol. Unlike metal-filtered immersion methods like the French press, it minimizes the presence of coffee oils in the cup, some of which have been linked to raising LDL cholesterol (2).

Drip coffee makers are designed to boil water as it progresses through the internal plumbing of the machine, but don’t worry, it won’t be at boiling temperature by the time it contacts your bed of coffee grounds! The ideal temperature for extracting coffee is between 195 and 205 ℉, and the best coffee makers should deliver brew water to the basket within that range.

The grounds you use to make drip coffee should not be reused – at least not to make coffee. When you brew a cup of coffee, the hot water extracts all the flavor compounds from the coffee beans into your drink. If you try and brew a second time, little flavor remains. That said, there are some excellent uses for used coffee grounds in the garden and around the house.

Drip coffee contains 2 calories per 8 oz serving, which refers to black coffee served without sugar, creamer, or other additives. The calories in coffee come from trace amounts of protein and oils found naturally in the coffee bean (3).

You can use any type of coffee bean in an espresso machine; it need not be labeled “espresso.” However, it does need to be finely ground. The medium-ground coffee used for an automatic coffee machine is too coarse for proper extraction by an espresso machine, and your shot will be weak, sour, and lacking crema.
