Editorial Guidelines

At Home Brews Coffee, we pride ourselves on producing engaging, creative, useful, and, above all, punctual content. Our content team consists of writers, editors, translators, and designers worldwide. We all work together like a clock, thanks to our strictly outlined editorial protocols. Each member has a unique set of tasks designed to fulfill a part of the editorial process before and after the article is published.

Our mission is to make home coffee brewing an excitable and pleasing experience for our readers.

Every article is, therefore, planned, outlined, written, edited, fact-checked, and then formatted for the best website user experience. Additionally, each article is supported by illustrations drafted specifically for the articles in question, as well as original photographs of the products we reviewed and tested.

Subject-Matter Expert Writers

Our team members are coffee experts in their respective fields, from doctors to scientists to researchers to baristas to coffee shop owners. The Homegrounds team members are selected for their knowledge of coffee and real-world experience in coffee-brewing, as well as their ability to put complex information in a clear and helpful way.

Worldwide Audience

Each article written for the US market is then localized and translated for our other language markets: United Kingdom, Canada, Spain and Latin America, Sweden and Germany. All this provides our readers with a joyful experience while giving them crucial information on which they may base their decisions to purchase the products we review.

Our content

We produce three groups of content: reviews, brewing guides, and informational blog pieces. For the reviews, we can get compensation or advertise some sponsored products, but this is always marked clearly via affiliate links or actual sponsorship disclaimers. You can check our marketing policy in detail in our website’s disclosure section

Equally important, our team goes by the rule of human writing, meaning we do not accept content written by AI (artificial intelligence). All our articles are researched, written, and thoroughly edited by humans (our team members).

Single Reviews

Our single reviews focus on coffee gear, local roasters, and all the major coffee brands. From essential pieces of equipment and non-essential geeky tools to unique tastes of locally-roasted coffees, Home Brews Coffee dives deep into all things coffee. We test, research, and photograph our products for full transparency. Read more about our testing process.

Our review principles rely on a defined set of specifications that are researched and marked in detail. These specifications are the same for the same product types, providing consistency throughout the website. This allows the reader to make well-informed comparisons, all in one place. Be it the packaging, ease of use, or grind consistency and flavour notes, our reviews will tell the good from the bad and pinpoint the yes and no of all products we present.

Review Roundups

When it comes to our product recommendations, the review roundups are on the other side of the medal. These are the reviews of the best picks in one product category. We aim to pick products that are the most representable for specific intentions of use.

Each roundup will have our Top Pick and Best Overall awards, meaning our whole team stands behind that choice. But, we also always have Budget and Best Value picks that are important for people who do not want to spend a great amount of money but still want to know the great options out there.

What makes our roundups stand out from others are well-prepared buying guides and pro tips from our team experts.

Additionally, we try to cover each recommendation from our roundups in our single review articles so that the readers can check a more thorough review of the product they find in our roundup list.

Finally, we are aware that products often get discontinued or a newer, more advanced one shows up on the market, particularly when it comes to specialty coffees. This is why we aim to update our gear picks twice a year and coffee recommendations every two months. We believe this gives our readers a fair and fresh overview of the market.

How-to Guides

Our guides consist of brewing tutorials and coffee recipes. They are meant for people who want to perfect their skills, such as doing latte art, or learn some basic stuff like descaling espresso machines. We also try to cover our guides with videos from our YouTube channel because we know that video tutorials are what really help in guiding the readers through the steps.

Our recipes are made by our in-house barista, who photographs each recipe step to provide the readers with the most useful experience. Like in our roundups, recipes offer many pro tips because sometimes you don’t have the right kind of milk, and we tell you it’s okay to replace it with plant-based versions. Recipes are meant to be useful yet fun because enjoying coffee is fun!

Blog pieces

Our blog section is a place where all the fun and informative stuff about coffee goes. We inform our readers about the world’s coffee cultures, the amounts of caffeine in certain coffee drinks, and also people who invented some of the most famous coffee gear like the Aeropress or espresso machine. The only rule we follow in our blog pieces is a fun approach to facts about coffee. By facts, we do not mean only the correct use of facts but also the approach to the cultural contexts we write about and using critical perspectives to all topics we cover.

Comments

Our website offers a comments section that functions on the principles of equality, freedom of speech, and zero tolerance to violence. Any comment promoting violence or political incorrectness towards any gender, race, or social group will immediately be deleted. The comments section serves for coffee lovers to share their thoughts on our content, suggest, or criticise what they have read. Importantly, we take every suggestion and remark seriously and have already made numerous edits to the website, following our readers’ observations. Our readers are part of our community, and the comments sections and email subscriptions are traits of regular communication between them and the Home Brews Coffee team.

Fact-Checking

We take the accuracy of our content very seriously. We understand that our readers rely on us for precise and trustworthy information, and we are committed to meeting that expectation. Our fact-checking process is rigorous and thorough, designed to ensure that every piece of information we share is accurate and reliable.

Every article we publish undergoes a stringent fact-checking procedure.

To complement our own first-hand experience, we draw from reputable sources within the industry, including coffee communities such as the coffee and espresso SubReddits and a number of specialty coffee forums and private groups.

Sources, References, Citations

Our editors cross-reference every claim, statistic, and piece of data with multiple sources to verify its accuracy. We also compare our own experience to community reviews to see if there is anything we may have overlooked. Any discrepancies found are flagged and corrected before the article is published.

This meticulous process ensures that the information you receive from Home Brews Coffee is not only engaging and useful but also trustworthy and reliable. We’re committed to helping you ‘Brew Better Coffee’, and that starts with providing you with the best, most accurate information possible.

Up-to-date Information

We’re aware that information changes from time to time. With help from our researchers and fact-checkers, our editorial team evaluates our existing content every few months to ensure all information is updated. If needed, our articles are then re-edited and re-checked. If you ever come across any outdated information or inconsistencies in our content, please contact us at [email protected].
