Swiss-made Jura coffee machines are ideal for anyone who enjoys the convenience of specialty coffee drinks at home (1). But it’s crucial that you understand the difference between Jura models – and how they compare to other automatic espresso machines. Each has its own coffee-making magic, but only one has the right set of tricks for you.

Best Overall

1. Jura E8

  • Display: 2.8” color display with buttons

  • Specialty Drinks: 17
  • Grinder: Professional Aroma
  • Water tank: 64 oz

The Jura E8 coffee maker isn’t the brand’s top-of-the-line model (scroll down to the Z10 for that), but I awarded it Best Overall because it has a balance of features and price that I think will appeal to most coffee enthusiasts. Indeed, it has been the best-selling model for years, and it gets better with every upgrade.

The current version is a thing of beauty. It offers 17 specialty drinks – all the coffee shop classics, including modern favorites like the flat white and cortado. Each is fully customizable using the vibrant color display.

High-quality coffee and espresso are ensured by the P.E.P. and 3D brewing technologies coupled with the latest generation Professional Aroma grinder (2). Jura machines consistently deliver a better espresso or cup of coffee than any super-automatic espresso machine I’ve tried.

Theoretically, pressure pulsing is similar to doing pre-infusion in the middle of the shot, multiple times. As such, one would expect the same or higher extraction in a given output volume.

I also loved how simple it is to keep this machine clean, with automatic cycles for everything, including one-touch cleaning of the milk system. The drip tray is easy to maneuver and never spills.

The brewing unit isn’t removable, so you’re forced to buy Jura cleaning tablets to keep it pristine, but this is true of every model.

Read my full review of the Jura E8 for more.

Pros:

  • Excellent balance of features, drink selection, and price
  • Easy to use, clean, and maintain
  • Great coffee quality

Cons:

  • Can’t make ristretto
  • Buttons rather than touchscreen
Runner Up

2. Jura S8

  • Display: 4.3” touchscreen color display

  • Specialty Drinks: 15
  • Grinder: Multi-level Aroma G3
  • Water tank: 64 oz

The Jura S8 is a recent and popular addition to the Jura line-up. It pairs the advanced display technology typically reserved for the GIGA and Z lines with the more compact frame and style of the E line.

The S8 costs a few hundred dollars more than the E8, and most of that is attributed to its spectacular 4.3” full-color touchscreen display—the same as the Z10. If you’re willing to pay for this convenience, you’ll probably prefer this model. It’s not just that it has a larger screen; it’s a more intuitive experience, with colorful graphics and fun animations to guide you through drink selection and programming.

Interestingly, the S8 offers a slightly different selection of specialty drinks than the E8, so the right machine for you might depend on your coffee preferences. The S8 includes a ristretto and double ristretto but omits the cortado, Americano, and Caffe Barista (essentially a short Americano).

I was surprised to find that while the S8 includes P.E.P. and Fine Foam, it doesn’t have the 3D Brewing technology. I only really noticed this when brewing black coffee, which seemed to have a bit less depth – and is perhaps why an Americano isn’t on the menu here.

Pros:

  • Large touchscreen display with user-friendly programming
  • Sleek and modern design
  • 15 specialty drinks, including ristretto

Cons:

  • No cortado, Americano, or Caffe Barista
  • Higher cost due to the touchscreen
Best Value For Money

3. Jura E6

  • Display: 2’8” color display with buttons

  • Specialty Drinks: 11
  • Grinder: Professional Aroma
  • Water tank: 64 oz

The Jura E6 coffee machine is the least expensive model to offer both coffee and milk froth, falling between the ENA 4 and ENA 8 in price. It reminds me a bit of the now discontinued D6, but it has been given a more premium feel with the color display and sleek design of the E8.

The E6 is essentially the E8 with a smaller selection of specialty drinks and a substantially lower price tag. To my surprise, it still offers the advanced 3D Brewing technology, something even the more expensive models lack.

Where it falls short is in the latte department; this is a cappuccino lover’s machine.

The E6 has a frother specifically designed to produce airy cappuccino froth, not silky latte microfoam (3). That means you can enjoy a delightful espresso, coffee, Americano, cappuccino, or macchiato – all fully customizable to your taste – but cortados, lattes, latte macchiatos, and flat whites are off the menu.

Additionally, the milk spout on this machine is in the middle of the machine, with the coffee spouts, rather off to the side like some others. So you can make your cappuccino at the touch of a button, without moving the cup midway to add froth.

If you’re a cappuccino fan, this is an incredible machine at an even better price! If you can’t survive without a proper latte, keep scrolling.

Pros:

  • Makes one-touch cappuccinos
  • Premium design with color display
  • Outstanding value for money

Cons:

  • No lattes, cortados, or flat whites
  • Buttons rather than touchscreen
Best For Small Spaces

4. Jura ENA 8

  • Display: 2.8” color touchscreen display

  • Specialty Drinks: 15
  • Grinder: Professional Aroma
  • Water tank: 32.7 oz

The Jura ENA 8 is one of the smallest machines produced by Jura, perfect for anyone with limited counter space. Measuring just 10.7 × 12.7 × 17.5 in, it’s as small as the basic ENA 4.

Though small, the ENA 8 is mighty. Unlike the ENA 4, it’s equipped with an automatic milk frother and two coffee spouts – a recent and much-requested addition, as previous models could only make one drink at a time. And unlike the E6, it can make any milky drink your heart desires, including latte, flat white, and cortado. It’s a bit pricier than either of those, but not by as much as you would guess!

The only trade-off is the relatively small water tank, which measures just 33 ounces. It was inevitable something be sacrificed to fit so much tech in such a small package, and I think they made the right choice. But if you’re a heavier user, all those refills might get tiresome.

That said, at least they made it showy to compensate; the side-mounted cylindrical tank is crafted to mimic a crystal carafe.

Get all the details in our Jura ENA 8 review.

Pros:

  • Most compact machine with a milk frother
  • Color touchscreen display
  • Full range of specialty drinks with 3D brewing

Cons:

  • Small water tank
  • Doesn’t make a ristretto
Best For Cold Brew

5. Jura Z10

  • Display: 4.3″ touchscreen color display

  • Specialty Drinks: 32
  • Grinder: Product Recognizing Grinder
  • Water tank: 81 oz

The Z10 is the top-of-the-line Jura machine designed for home use. While it comes with a hefty price tag, it’s about as close as you can get to having a professional barista on call in your kitchen.

This premium coffee machine does much more than I could possibly convey in this overview, but I’ll entice you with a few of the highlights.

The Z10 has a massive list of 32 specialty drinks to satisfy every coffee lover, but the most unique is cold brew.

This machine makes real-deal cold brew without the overnight wait, using coarsely ground coffee and high-pressure pulsed extraction. You can sub cold brew for espresso in any specialty drink. Craving a cold brew cortado on a hot day? This is the only machine that can deliver.

The new Product Recognizing Grinder is another noteworthy innovation. It automatically adapts the grind to your drink selection, making tiny quick changes with a degree of precision that would be impossible to achieve manually.

As you would expect, the Z10 is equipped with the latest generation brew unit and 3D Brewing technology for optimal extraction. This ensures a rich and flavorful cup of coffee every time, whether you choose to brew a single shot or a jug of coffee. That’s right – the Z10 can prepare a full carafe!

The full-color 4.3” touchscreen display guides you easily through all the options and settings. So not only is it like having a barista on staff, but it’s the most patient barista you’ve ever encountered.

Pros:

  • Huge specialty drink selection
  • Every drink can be made with cold brew
  • Only model with adjustable milk temperature

Cons:

  • Very expensive
  • Surprisingly doesn’t offer ristretto
Best For Lattes

6. Jura J8

  • Display: 4.3” touchscreen color display

  • Specialty Drinks: 31
  • Grinder: P.A.G.2+
  • Water tank: 64 oz

All the higher-end Jura machines can make a delicious latte, but the J8 has an extra trick up its sleeve that makes it my pick as the best latte machine. It’s the only model with the Sweet Foam function, which flavors the milk foam with your favorite coffee syrup.

Most sweetened lattes are made by mixing the syrup with the espresso, but having tested the J8, I’m now a convert to flavoring the foam instead! It really intensifies the flavored coffee experience, particularly the aroma (4).

The latte has an important role in the specialty coffee industry…because it has so many variations. You can call it caffè latte, café au lait, or café con leche. You can have it iced or with syrups.

Another innovation unique to the J line is the somewhat ominously named Coffee Eye. Don’t worry—your coffee machine isn’t surveilling you; it’s actually watching your cup. The display updates its drink options depending on whether you place your mug under the espresso or foam spout, so you don’t have to worry about dispensing that perfectly sweetened foam onto your countertop.

The J8 includes Jura’s patented P.A.G.2+ grinder, which apparently borrows technology from Formula 1 racing! I don’t know which part of the race car they adapted, but I will say that this grinder is exceptionally quick and quiet. For espresso drink newbies, the display helpfully recommends grind settings based on your selected drink.

Pros:

  • Sweet Foam function for flavored lattes
  • Coffee Eye technology prevents spills
  • Huge variety of delicious coffee drinks

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Large
Best For The Office

7. Jura Giga 10

  • Display: 6.7″ Panorama Coffee Panel

  • Specialty Drinks: 35
  • Grinder: 2 electronically adjustable ceramic disc grinders
  • Water tank: 87.9 oz

The Giga 10, the latest update to the long-popular Jura Giga 6, is the best, biggest, and most expensive Jura automatic machine. I have a hard time picturing anyone buying this for their home, but it’s the perfect Jura coffee machine for a bustling office – especially if you want your business to have the happiest and most caffeinated employees (5). Productivity awaits!

The Giga 10 has the largest menu of different coffee drinks, including all the cold brew options of the Z10. Plus, you can completely customize your coffee, adjusting brew strength, coffee temperature, milk temperature, and quantity of milk and milk foam.

All those features are accessed via the biggest screen of any Jura, a massive 6.7” panorama touchscreen display.

The most obvious difference between this machine and the rest is that it has two coffee grinders, each with its own hopper. So you can offer two different coffee types to satisfy more users. Perhaps a dark roast and a light roast, or a regular and a decaf?

Both grinders are equipped with Automatic Grinder Adjustment technology, which is constantly analyzing burr wear and making adjustments accordingly, ensuring consistency and extending the lifetime of your grinders.

Pros:

  • Huge selection of hot and cold specialty drinks
  • Two independent grinders
  • Extra-large color touchscreen display

Cons:

  • Very large and expensive
  • A direct-plumb option would be nice at this level
Budget Pick

8. Jura ENA 4

  • Display: Symbol display

  • Specialty Drinks: 4
  • Grinder: Multi-level Aroma G3
  • Water tank: 37.2 oz

The ENA 4 is the entry-level Jura espresso machine – previously the Jura A1. It only brews espresso and coffee, so this is a coffee machine that caters to black coffee drinkers. Eliminating the milk frothing system makes this model far less expensive and simpler to own and operate than the rest.

The ENA 4 features the same pulsed extraction, thermoblock heater, and 15-bar pump as the more expensive models. So you’ll enjoy the same excellent coffee at a much lower cost. It even shares the multi-level aroma G3 grinder of the S8, which is nearly three times its price.

Another cost-saving feature is the simple display. Without dozens of drink options to wade through, there’s no need for a fancy color touchscreen to control the machine. Instead, it’s simple to set up your favorites and brew at the touch of a button.

This basic model is very compact, measuring 10.7” wide, 12.7” high, and 17.5” deep. The size is identical to the ENA 8, but the ENA 4 actually sports a larger water tank.

The biggest downside of this budget model is that you can only brew one drink at a time, which removes a level of convenience for couples. There are also just three coffee strength settings, compared to 8 to 10 on the bigger models, but I always thought 10 was overkill anyway.

Pros:

  • Most affordable price
  • HIgh-quality espresso or regular coffee
  • Easy-to-use one-touch operation

Cons:

  • No milk frothing system
  • Can only make one drink at a time

What Is So Special About Jura Coffee Machines?

Three things set Jura apart from the crowd of super automatic espresso machines, justifying their higher-than-average prices.

First, there’s the exceptional build quality. Each is designed, engineered, and built in Switzerland, and you won’t find any flimsy plastic pieces or leaky seals. In fact, Jura’s are so well made that there’s a substantial market for refurbished machines.

Second, Jura coffee machines allow relatively large coffee doses, up to 16 grams. A lot of super-automatic machines max out around 10 grams, which can make for weak-tasting drinks. Nespresso pods only contain about 5 to 7 grams of coffee!

Finally, Jura holds patents on several advanced technologies found only in its machines. These impact everything from the quality of espresso and milk foam to the coffee bean grinder and the display. Here are a few of the most important innovations:

Unique Jura Technology

  • Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.): Once reserved for only high-end machines, P.E.P. is now standard in every Jura model. It ensures an optimal extraction time for the best-flavor espresso and ristretto shots.
  • 3D Brewing: Available on the E, J, and Z lines, 3D brewing technology uses a custom-designed brewing unit to let water flow evenly through the puck of ground coffee at multiple levels.
  • Fine Foam: The Fine Foam technology is an advanced integrated milk frother. It draws milk into a chamber and heats and aerates it simultaneously. Compared to other machines I’ve tested, Jura lattes have smoother and longer-lasting milk foam.
  • Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System (I.P.B.A.S.): I initially thought this was just a fancy term for a pre-infusion stage, but of course, Jura goes above and beyond; the word “intelligent” is there for a reason. The I.P.B.A.S. automatically adapts the pre-infusion based on the amount of ground coffee you’ve selected for your drink, ensuring the best possible extraction (6).

How To Choose The Best Jura Espresso Machine

How do you decide which Jura automatic coffee machine is right for you? Although they share a common aesthetic, there are crucial differences between them that should make it easy to narrow down your top pick.

Here are a few key things to consider before you buy a Jura coffee machine.

What’s Your Favorite Coffee Drink?

Different Jura coffee makers offer different types of coffee drinks, so if you have a favorite at the local coffee shop, choose wisely.

The more expensive machines offer all the classics – coffee, espresso, latte, and cappuccino. Other coffee shop standards vary by model, so consult the specifications carefully before you buy if you usually crave a ristretto, Americano, cortado, or flat white.

  • Only the J8 has the sweetened milk foam technology.
  • Only the Z10 and Giga 10 make cold brew.
  • The budget-priced E6 doesn’t offer lattes, flat whites, or cortados, so it’s a better choice for cappuccino aficionados.
  • The ENA 4 doesn’t have a milk frothing system, making it perfect for straight espresso and black coffee lovers.

How Many People Do You Need To Serve?

Every Jura machine except the ENA 4 has two coffee spouts and can make two black coffee drinks at a time, as long as both people want the same thing. This can be a time-saver for a couple with shared preferences, but the benefit isn’t that substantial. Brewing a drink only takes about 30 seconds, and there is just one milk spout, so you’d need to wait for consecutive lattes anyway.

If you have a large household, like to host friends, or are buying for the office, you should also factor in the size of the water tank. A small tank like the ENA 8’s will need to be refilled often if you’re making a lot of drinks, which can get annoying fast, especially if your machine isn’t sink-adjacent.

What’s Your Budget?

Jura espresso machines can be divided into three price brackets, so if you have a set budget, you can immediately narrow down your choices.

The most affordable models are under $2000 (the ENA 4, E6, and ENA 8), the typical models are between $2000 and $3000 (the E8, S8, and J8), and the fanciest models (Z10 and Giga) are over $3000.

If you can’t find a machine that’ll meet your needs and fit your budget, look for a refurbished Jura. Many are offered at a deep discount, and because they are so well made, they’ll still deliver years of loyal service – often outlasting brand-new machines from lesser brands.

The Verdict

Which Jura machine should you buy? If you have specific drink demands or a set budget, your answer might vary. But my pick for the best Jura coffee maker is the crowd-pleasing mid-range Jura E8.

It offers 17 specialty milk and coffee drinks, including traditional and modern classics, and a full-color display to help you select and customize your favorites. The latest update to the brewing unit adds advanced 3D Brewing technology for even more flavorful coffee and espresso extraction. It’s not a cheap machine by any means, but the value for money is solid.

FAQs

Jura coffee machines are expensive because they are made in Switzerland from premium materials and are packed with advanced technology to make perfect coffee. There may be some markup associated with the Jura brand, but for the most part, you’re getting what you pay for. With proper care, these machines tend to far outlast their cheaper counterparts.

Jura coffee machines have an average lifespan of 6 to 10 years, roughly double that of most coffee machines on the market. And there are plenty of examples of 15-plus-year-old Juras still going strong. This is due to their build quality and energy-saving technology, such as the Energy Save Mode and Zero-Energy Switch.

How often you should clean the machine depends on how much you use it, but luckily, the Jura automatic coffee center is pre-programmed to alert you when cleaning is required. Typically, it’s every 180 brewing cycles, or approximately 3 to 6 months.
