1. Natural Bliss Sweet Cream Creamer
Type: Liquid
- Base: Dairy milk
- Dietary notes: Gluten-free, carrageenan-free, non-GMO
- Calories per tablespoon: 35
Natural Bliss Sweet Cream dairy creamer was the unanimous winner of our taste tests – with the caveat that we’re a bunch of specialty coffee geeks, not necessarily creamer experts. We all praised the subtle sweetness and rich texture of this milk and cream option. It feels like it augments the coffee rather than hides it, especially when paired with a darker roast coffee.
I was also impressed by the simple ingredients list and relatively low sugar content, just 4 grams of added sugar per tablespoon.
The Natural Bliss Sweet Cream isn’t all that different than adding cream and sugar to your cup of coffee, except that it lasts longer and dissolves better, particularly in cold coffee. Pro tip: If you have a frothing wand, froth a little to pour over a cup of cold brew for a delicious and low-calorie hot weather treat.
Ingredients: Skim Milk, Cream, Sugar, Buttermilk, Soybean Oil, Gellan Gum, Natural Flavor.
2. International Delight French Vanilla Creamer
Type: Liquid
- Base: Water, Palm oil
- Dietary restrictions: Kosher, gluten-free, lactose-free, non-GMO
- Calories per tablespoon: 35
I didn’t want to love the International Delight coffee creamer as much as I did. It doesn’t have a particularly appealing ingredients list – certainly not as “all-natural” as some of the others. But I can’t argue with blind taste tests. Most of the team was quick to declare this the best of the French vanilla creamers we tried.
It’s possible that some of the appeal was simple nostalgia. International Delight has been a leading creamer brand for decades, served in diners, hotels, and offices everywhere. But I think it’s more than that. The vanilla flavor was rich and compelling. It wasn’t overly sweet and you could really taste the subtle custardy undertone that distinguishes French vanilla.
Ingredients: Water, Cane Sugar, Palm Oil, Sodium Caseinate, Dipotassium Phosphate, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Mono and Diglycerides, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Polysorbate 60, Carrageenan, Salt.
3. Starbucks Caramel Macchiato
Type: Liquid
- Base: Dairy milk
- Dietary restrictions: Gluten-free
- Calories per tablespoon: 40
Most of the creamers on this list are flavored, but for the Best Flavored Creamer award, I wanted something slightly more creative. Bolder flavored creamers are harder to get right. Most are over-the-top, over-sweet, or overly fake-tasting, but the Starbucks Caramel Macchiato Coffee Creamer stood out for its restraint.
I stirred a little into an Americano I made at home and actually enjoyed it more than the in-store Caramel Macchiato (1). It’s nice being able to add just as much as I want to dial in the sweetness level. You can get this same flavor in non-dairy and sugar-free versions but neither offered quite the same depth of flavor, in my opinion.
Ingredients: Nonfat Milk, Sugar, Heavy Cream, Buttermilk, Vegetable Oil, Natural Flavor, Gellan Gum.
4. Califia Farms Organic Almond Vanilla Creamer
Type: Liquid
- Base: Almond milk
- Dietary restrictions: Organic, plant-based, dairy-free, gluten-free
- Calories per tablespoon: 20
Califia Farms deserves credit as the most natural creamer on this list, and not just because it is plant-based and organic. Too many brands are using the “all-natural” buzzword these days, but a quick glance at the Califia Farms ingredients list reveals a creamer recipe I could probably make at home – no gums, oils, stabilizers, or preservatives (2).
This creamer tastes that way, too. It has a sort of fresh, non-processed flavor that many of our tasters picked up on and enjoyed.
The brand’s Organic series of plant-based creamers has a few flavor options, but we all agreed that the Vanilla coffee creamer was the best of the bunch. It has a pleasantly sweet and floral note without straying into perfume territory. It pairs beautifully with a medium-roast coffee or an Earl Grey tea.
Ingredients: Organic Almondmilk, Organic Cane Sugar, Baking Soda, Organic Natural Flavor.
5. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Hazelnut
Type: Powder
- Base: Coconut oil, corn syrup solids, sodium caseinate
- Dietary restrictions: Gluten-free
- Calories per tablespoon: 50
Powdered creamers are a different breed. They don’t require refrigeration and last virtually forever, making them perfect if you only occasionally want sweetened or flavored coffee. Personally, I like them to mix with instant coffee while camping.
This Hazelnut creamer flavor from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf was the team’s overall favorite pick – a big step up from old-school Coffee Mate (3). In fact, this brand had all our favorite powdered options, so check out their other flavors if you’re not a hazelnut fan.
It has a surprisingly natural hazelnut taste and not-too-intense sweetness. You can even add it to hot cocoa for a Nutella-esque flavor without putting yourself in a sugar coma. The brand claims you can mix it with hot water for a hazelnut drink, but I’ll be honest, none of our tasters were fond of that. Stick with adding it to coffee, tea, cocoa, or warm milk.
Ingredients: Sugar, Coconut Oil, Corn Syrup Solids, Sodium Caseinate, Whey Powder, Crystalline Fructose, Natural & Artificial Flavor, Dipotassium Phosphate, Propylene Glycol Esters of Fatty Acids, Mono and Diglycerides, Soy Lecithin, Sodium Citrate, Carrageenan, Guar Gum, Color, Sodium Aluminosilicate, Silicon Dioxide, Salt.
6. Nutpods Unsweetened Non-Dairy Half & Half
Type: Liquid
- Base: Almond and coconut milk
- Dietary restrictions: Glyphosate-residue free, vegan, non-GMO, Whole30, gluten-free, kosher, carrageenan-free, and soy-free.
- Calories per tablespoon: 8
Nutpods Non-Dairy Half & Half takes the budget award as the lowest-priced option on the list, but affordability is not its only virtue. I thought this was one of the best non-dairy cream substitutes I’ve tried.
It’s certainly the best option on this list for anyone who wants to add creaminess but not sweetness to their coffee.
It’s also the best pick for anyone watching their caloric intake, with the lowest calorie count per serving and 0 grams of sugar.
Nutpods uses a base of almond and coconut milks, which initially made me nervous; coconut is a strong flavor that can easily overpower coffee. But my fears were unfounded. It has a pleasantly neutral flavor, making it the pick on this list I’d be most inclined to recommend to specialty coffee drinkers.
Ingredients: Water, Sea Salt, Acacia Gum, Almond, Sunflower Lecithin, Coconut Cream, Gellan Gum, Dipotassium Phosphate.
How to Choose the Best Coffee Creamer
Coffee creamer can be a great alternative to milk, cream, or half-and-half if you prefer not to drink coffee black. It has a longer shelf life, and many are suitable for those who don’t consume dairy.
Choosing the right coffee creamer depends primarily on your personal preferences, including flavors, budget, and dietary restrictions. I’ll walk you through what to consider in this buyer’s guide.
Powder Vs Liquid Creamers
I generally prefer liquid creamers because they have a better texture and dissolve equally well in hot or iced coffee. Plus, they can be suitable for milk frothing.
However, powdered creamers have the advantage of being shelf-stable and (usually) less expensive. They’re a great option if you only occasionally use coffee creamer – perhaps for a particular special drink or to keep on hand for guests – or need something for traveling or camping.
Coffee Creamer Flavors
Most of the best-selling coffee creamer options are flavored; otherwise, you’re in the realm of coffee whitener. Think about which flavors you enjoy and which pair best with your preferred coffee beans while shopping.
Mild flavored coffee creamers like vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, and sweet cream tend to be best for everyday drinking. More exotic or seasonal flavors – like pumpkin spice, peppermint mocha, brownie cheesecake, etc – are often better saved for special occasion drinks, as they can get overwhelming on a daily basis. But there are no rules here.
If you want flavor without the creamy texture, check out our guides to the best-tasting coffee syrups and how to flavor hot coffee.
Dietary Requirements And Requests
These days, you can find a coffee creamer to suit any dietary requirement. There are plenty of non-dairy creamers made from oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, and even pistachio milk (delicious but VERY expensive).
You can also find creamers designated soy-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, lactose-free, carrageenan-free, or kosher (4). You can find keto-friendly, paleo-friendly, and Whole30 creamers. You can find creamers with or without artificial flavors and colors, and with or without stabilizers and preservation additives.
I’ve included the coffee creamer ingredients for every option on this list, as well as the brand’s nutrition claims. So you can feel confident you’re making the right decision for your dietary needs.
What is the healthiest coffee creamer?
This is the question I get most often regarding coffee creamers, and it’s virtually impossible to answer because we all define “healthy” differently.
Some people consider healthy to be low-fat, while those on the keto diet feel the opposite. Some define healthy as low in sugar, while others fear artificial sweeteners. Some coffee lovers think of healthy as low-calorie, while others want a coffee creamer packed with additives like collagen or MCT oil.
As such, the only blanket statement I will make here is that black coffee is a wonderfully healthy drink, packed with energy-boosting caffeine and disease-fighting antioxidants. What you decide to add to it to meet your individual health goals is up to you.
The Verdict
The best creamer for your morning coffee depends on your taste, dietary requirements, and the flavor and/or sweetness you want to add to your brew.
My winner this year, based on personal preference and feedback from the whole team, is the Sweet Cream flavor from Natural Bliss Creamers. This milk creamer won over our taste-testers with its rich texture, subtle sweetness and dairy flavor, and natural ingredients list.
FAQs
Coffee creamer can be healthy, but it depends on the brand and the ingredients – and your definition of “healthy.” The amount of creamer added to coffee is generally small, so it shouldn’t pose a health or weight-gain risk. But keep an eye out for ingredients like trans fats, artificial flavors, and thickeners if you’re concerned.
The best coffee creamer for diabetics is any unsweetened coffee creamer – for example, the Nutpods Half & Half on this list. Of course, if you are diabetic, I recommend consulting your doctor if you’re concerned about your dietary needs. I am not qualified to offer medical advice.
There is no best cream to use in coffee. It depends on your taste, dietary needs, and the drink you’re making. For a simple black coffee, half & half (10%), coffee/cereal cream (18%), or heavy whipping cream (36%) all add a lovely richness and body. If you’re making frothed milk for an espresso drink, whole milk or 2% milk are more common.
