Full Review Of The Normcore Tamper

Normcore was founded by a young group of coffee lovers eager to provide professional-grade equipment for the at-home barista at affordable prices (1). The well-received original Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper was their first market offering.

Now they’re back with an upgraded version. I tested the Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper V4 to see how it holds up. Is it the best tamper for all your espresso-brewing needs?

Build Quality – 4/5

The Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper V4 has an ergonomic build that fits as perfectly into your hand as it does into your kitchen decor. Upon unboxing, I was faced with the tamper itself, an aluminum lid to protect the tamping base, two extra springs, and an instruction card.

Each Normcore tamper uses aluminum alloy for the handle and baffle, brass for the core sleeve, and 304-grade stainless steel for the outer spring, top stud, inner spring, bottom stud, locking pin, and flat base.

The base is important for your coffee because it will level the surface of your puck and add some weight to the tamp. The handle is important for you because it needs to be designed in a manner that protects your wrist and is suitable for the size of your hand.

This high-quality tamper accounts for the hand and wrist safety of both aspiring home baristas and busy cafes (2). I only make two espressos a day, so I may not be the target audience for ergonomics, but I never experienced any wrist strain.

Tamping – 4.5/5

To use, simply set the Normcore espresso tamper on your portafilter of ground coffee and press and turn clockwise. It’s foolproof.

Much of the excitement around this tamper stems from its interchangeable springs, but I was even more impressed with the ingenious design of the leveling plate.

It ensures your tamp is consistently flat and level by resting on top of the filter basket as you press down on ground coffee. In my experience, producing a flat surface is much more challenging than getting the right pressure, and this tamper tackles both problems.

Adjustable Pressure

The Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper V4 comes with a 25-pound pre-calibrated spring inside to guarantee consistent pressure when tamping. It also comes with a 15-pound spring and a 30-pound spring that are interchangeable.

Switching out the springs is simple, even for me, a person not particularly mechanically inclined. I followed the simple instruction guide with no issues. The only tool required is a small Allen key, included with purchase. However, there is no indication on the springs or packaging as to which is which. I assumed I would feel an obvious stiffness difference, but that’s not really the case. A simple dot of paint or even a temporary tag would go a long way.

The Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper is easier to use than a standard tamper because you don’t need to gauge the tamper pressure by hand; how much force you apply is simply controlled by the built-in spring. But I still faced a short learning curve when determining the correct ground coffee dose.

This tamper has a plunging depth of 10 mm, and it isn’t adjustable because of the leveling plate. So you need to nail the dose to get an appropriate puck density. It took me a few shots to hit the sweet spot.

Style – 4/5

The Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper V4 has a sleek and attractive design, with smooth curves and a matte black finish. It’s fairly large compared to the other tampers in my collection, but this isn’t a criticism. Its size and mass make it comfortable to hold and easy to press.

The upgraded central shaft design is the difference between the Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper V4 and previous versions.

The new model improves precision tamping for even presses and barista comfort for long-term handling. Since the fits directly onto the filter basket, hardly any coffee grounds get caught on the rim. This means the coffee puck is compressed to avoid gunking up the group head and prevent messes from side-channeling leakage.

You cannot adjust the tamper diameter. The Normcore tamper comes in 6 sizes: 45.5 mm, 49.7 mm, 51 mm, 51.5 mm, 53.3 mm, and 58.5 mm. I ordered the 53.3 mm, which was perfect for my Breville Bambino Plus (and most other Breville espresso machines).

The 45.5 mm size is appropriate for the Flair Pro or Flair Pro 2 espresso maker. For ROK espresso enthusiasts, the 49.7 mm is for you. Any coffee machines made after the year 2000 with 51 mm baskets and 60 mm group heads will warrant the 51.5 mm. The Normcore 58mm tamper is for use in commercial standard 58 mm portafilters, including the popular bottomless ones.

Value For Money – 4.5/5

Tampers range in cost from as low as the single digits up to hundreds of dollars. At around $50, the Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper V4 is incredible value for a pre-calibrated tamper, especially with the included interchangeable springs. The high-quality build and wrist-saving design mean this could easily be the last tamper you ever buy.

Things we liked:

  • Leveling plate ensures stability every time
  • Includes interchangeable springs to adjust tamping pressure
  • Comes in six sizes from 45.5 mm to 58.5 mm
  • Sleek and comfortable design

Things we didn’t like:

  • Springs weights aren’t labeled
  • Can’t adjust tamper depth

Do Not Buy If…

  • You want to save a little money – The more affordable Luxhaus tamper is similar in design and functionality to the Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper V4 but lacks the additional interchangeable springs. Instead, it is calibrated so the pressure applied is always 30 pounds.
  • You want adjustable depth – Maybe some days you drink a lot of coffee and other days you don’t need as much. For hassle-free tamping, the Crema tamper might be the perfect tamper for you. Not only does it have adjustable tamping depth, but it is a distributor, leveler, and tamper all-in-one to streamline making delicious shots (3).

The Verdict

I was thrilled with the performance and value of the Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper V4. Getting a calibrated tamper at this price is already a big win; the adjustable pressure is just the cherry on top. And, to continue the bad sundae metaphor, the ingenious leveling design is the chocolate sauce drizzled over everything.

I enjoyed consistently well-extracted and flavorful shots using this tamper, and I’d happily recommend it to any espresso enthusiast.
