The LuxHaus calibrated tamper is an affordable way to introduce a high-end tool to your arsenal of espresso accessories.

A Full Review Of The LuxHaus Tamper
The LuxHaus Flat Tamper is a state-of-the-art tool with a high-end design and surprisingly reasonable price point. It’s an excellent brewing companion for all coffee lovers, from beginners to expert baristas, ensuring espresso quality and consistency.
In this review, I’ll explore how it compares to other top espresso tampers in key categories, such as tamping ability, build quality, and ergonomics.
Quality Of Materials
The LuxHaus tamper has a flat stainless steel base and interior mechanism capped by a BPA-free plastic handle. The stainless steel is high-grade and corrosion-resistant, so unlike some of the cheapest tampers, it will never rust or flake.
Obviously, plastic is never my first choice for coffee gear. I prefer metal-handled tampers for their longevity and heft, and I have a soft spot for the lovely aesthetic of wood-handled versions. But I wouldn’t say the plastic here is a problem. There are no food-safe issues, and it feels very heavy-duty. It won’t crack if you drop it on your kitchen floor, though it might scuff if you hit it with your car or something equivalently violent and improbable.
The tamper arrives in a red velvet bag, which is sort of silly. But I appreciate the commitment to the “luxhaus” theme, and it makes this tamper a great gift option. Your recipient will definitely think you spent more money than you did!
Luxhaus backs this tamper with a lifetime guarantee, which is probably the best testament to its quality. You can get a full refund at any point for any problem – no questions asked.
Is A Calibrated Tamper Worth It?
The LuxHaus calibrated tamper comes from the factory pre-set to deliver the exact same tamping pressure every time. You pay a little more for this feature, but for a novice barista – or anyone who only occasionally makes espresso – I think it’s well worth the cost.
Consistency is king when it comes to espresso, and tamping pressure is one of the hardest variables to control. You can weigh your coffee dose. You can program your espresso machine to deliver the same water temperature, pressure, and shot volume. But you can’t program your arm to press the same amount of hard every morning (1).
Tamping—like grinding and dosing before it—requires consistency. However you decide to go about tamping, as long as you are consistent in your execution, you will be able to produce excellent espresso.
However, if you’re confident in your muscle memory, LuxHaus sells a less expensive non-calibrated version of this tamper.
In my experience, a level coffee surface and even distribution are just as important as a consistent tamp. Unfortunately, the LuxHaus tamper doesn’t offer any help here, so I’d suggest budgeting for a leveler or distribution tool as well – if you plan to get serious about home espresso.
Mystery Tamp Pressure
I was surprised to discover that LuxHaus doesn’t state the calibrated pressure of this tamper anywhere on their website, describing it only as the “optimal pressure for a flawless espresso extraction.” Perhaps this is a clever way of covering any quality control issues.
The long-agreed-upon ideal tamp pressure for espresso puck prep is 30 pounds, and while that number has recently come up for debate, I suspect that’s what LuxHaus is aiming for (2). I pulled out a bathroom scale to test mine and measured 29.4 pounds.
Flat Vs Convex Tamping Base
The LuxHaus tamper has a flat base, which is the more popular style for home baristas. Personally, I prefer a flat-base tamper. I find them more consistent, and it’s easier to wrap my head around creating a level surface.
Professional baristas who have thousands of hours of practice often prefer a convex base, which creates a firmer seal between the coffee grounds and the walls of the filter to limit channeling.
The choice is yours, but LuxHaus doesn’t offer a convex version. If that’s your pick, consider an alternative brand like the Espro Calibrated Tamper.
A Comfortable And Stylish Tamper
It’s important to find a tamper that feels comfortable in your hand and enables a neutral wrist position, and that importance grows exponentially with the number of espressos you need to prepare each day. Many a barista has suffered a repetitive strain injury from a poorly designed tamper.

I found the LuxHaus’s ergonomics excellent. The handle fits nicely in my palm, and its nearly 1-pound weight assists with the exertion of tamping. The average home user pulling a few shots a day will have no complaints.
This tamper has a simple, modern, and clean style. It’s not eye-catching, but it will pair nicely with the rest of your espresso gear, particularly given the current popularity of matte black and chrome.
Size Options
This tamper comes in four sizes – 49 mm, 51 mm, 53 mm, and 58 mm – where the size refers to the diameter of the base. This range covers virtually all domestic and commercial espresso machines, but it is still important to measure your portafilter before you buy to make sure it’s compatible.
Is The LuxHaus Tamper Worth Its Price?
This tamper is honestly a pretty spectacular value. At under $40, it’s one of the most affordable calibrated tampers on the market, and its lifetime warranty is the cherry on top.
The quality, ergonomics, and calibration are as good as any of the more expensive models I’ve tested. The only reason to spend more would be if you’re dead set against the plastic handle. Spending any less would virtually guarantee subpar craftsmanship.
Don’t Buy The LuxHaus Calibrated Tamper If…
- You don’t need a calibrated tamper: If you’re confident you can gauge the tamping pressure just right – or if you just don’t feel like your palate can taste the difference – you can save some cash by choosing a non-calibrated tamper. Just make sure you choose something with some weight to it, like the Rattleware Espresso Tamper.
- You want adjustable tamping pressure: The unique Normcore Spring-Loaded Tamper comes with three interchangeable springs that allow you to adjust the calibrated pressure to 15, 25, or 30 pounds. It’s a clever way to combine versatility and consistency.
- You run a coffee business: If you (or your staff) are tamping dozens of espresso shots a day, it’s worth investing in an automatic tamper like the Puqpress. It costs more upfront, but you’ll save money and heartache over the long run by preventing the dreaded “barista wrist (3).”
The Verdict
The LuxHaus is a high-quality calibrated tamper that will take your espresso to the next level. By eliminating the guesswork of tamping pressure, it removes a variable from the espresso equation, getting you one step closer to dialing in that perfect shot.
Its ergonomic design and heavy metal build make it easy to hit the requisite pressure with minimal strain, and it’s available in four sizes to accommodate almost every espresso machine. If you’re in the market for a new tamper, this is an easy one for me to recommend.
