ESPRO CALIBRATED TAMPER REVIEW: LEVEL-UP YOUR ESPRESSO
In the hip world of home espresso, flashy espresso machines, naked portafilters, and stunning latte art often steal the show. Meanwhile, the unsung heroes of consistently delicious espresso go unrecognized. I’m talking about tampers, one of the most important parts of the barista toolkit.

The 2024 Espro Calibrated Coffee Tamper Review
The Espro Calibrated Flat Tamper is a precision-engineered tool that helps you take your espresso to the next level. Though it is undoubtedly a larger financial investment than most other espresso tampers, it has a few features that set it apart.
Is A Calibrated Espresso Tamper Worth It?
A calibrated espresso tamper is a valuable tool for the home barista, especially if you’re learning the craft of espresso for the first time. It guarantees you deliver the exact same tamping pressure every time, thus removing one variable from the equation. You can focus your attention on dialing in the grind, dose, and distribution.
Using The Espro Calibrated Tamper
The Espro Calibrated Tamper arrives from the factory set to 30 lbs of pressure and never requires recalibration. It weighs a fairly hefty 16 ounces, which definitely helps apply force.
To use it, ensure your ground coffee is evenly distributed in the portafilter, then sit the Espro on top and press down smoothly to compress the grounds. When 30 pounds of pressure is reached, the tamper will emit a subtle yet distinguishable click. Espro has designed the calibration system to click in a way that does not shift or disturb the grounds.
The click system is unique to this calibrated tamper, and I have to say, I liked it more than I expected. Most calibrated tampers just stop when they hit the preset pressure. I much prefer the auditory feedback of the Espro.
Relying on the balance and calibration of the Espro also means ditching the often habitual tamping polish or other quirks like tapping the side of the portafilter (1). These unnecessary extras just introduce more variables to making espresso.
The goal of espresso puck prep is simplicity and reproducibility, and that is exactly what the Espro Calibrated Tamper provides.
I wish the Espro Tamper included a feature to help level the grounds. But I found that the heavy base had a very nice balance that found a sort of natural level when slotted into a portafilter.
What is the ideal tamping pressure?
Historically, 30lbs of pressure has always been recommended as the ideal. More recently, research suggests that the precise amount of pressure is less significant than once thought; many baristas prefer 15 or 20 pounds (2).
In short, we found that higher tamping pressure made no difference to the extraction…Our goal here isn’t to press down hard, it’s more about providing a compact surface to make sure the water does its job properly.
The important thing is to use enough pressure and the same pressure every time (3). The Espro Tamper ensures both.
What’s the difference between a flat and a convex base?
The Espro 30lb Calibrated Tamper is available with a flat or convex base, though the flat is more popular and available in more sizes.
Most home baristas, myself included, prefer a flat base, which tends to be more reliable for producing an even extraction and consistent espresso.
The counterargument is that the convex design creates a tighter seal between the ground coffee and the edges of the filter, preventing side channeling. Many professional baristas opt for convex tampers. Ultimately, the decision is yours, and Espro has you covered either way.
High-Quality Materials Matter
A tamper is a basic espresso accessory, but it needs to be well-made to survive the rigors of regular use over the long haul.
I’ve only been using this tamper for a few months, but I don’t think it’s hyperbole to suggest it might outlast me. It’s extremely durable, using materials that won’t break down under pressure or when exposed to moisture and coffee oils.
The base is stainless steel, and the handle is anodized aluminum. As much as I love the warm feel of a wood-handle tamper, it can’t match this aluminum model for longevity.
Espro’s Flat Tamper comes in four size options – 53 mm, 57 mm, 58 mm, and 58.35 mm – while the Convex version is only available in the commercial-standard 58mm tamper. The weight varies from 14.7 to 16 ounces.

The size range fits most home and commercial espresso machines, but you’ll want to double-check your filter basket diameter before you buy. For example, Delonghi home espresso machines use 51-mm baskets that won’t work with the Espro tamper.
Comfortable And Stylish
The Espro Flat Tamper has a sleek, minimalist style with a matte black handle and brushed stainless base. I think the plastic logo on top looks a little tacky and out of place, but its location means you can’t see it when tamping, so that’s kind of a non-issue.
The ergonomics are excellent. This is definitely one of the most comfortable tampers I’ve tested. It fits nicely in my hand without requiring any weird contortions to get a good grip.
Is The Espro Tamper Worth The Price?
For me, this is where this tamper falters. It costs just under $100, depending on where you buy it. That used to be a pretty standard price for a calibrated tamper, but these days, options from brands like Normcore and Luxhaus are less than half the cost. While I like the unique “click” system of the Espro, it’s hard to justify spending an extra $50 for it.
It’s worth noting, however, that Espro offers a pretty spectacular warranty, promising, “If one of our products does not perform over time, you may return it to your local representative for a repair, replacement, or refund.” Spending $100 doesn’t feel quite as excessive if it’s the only tamper you need to buy.
Don’t Buy The Espro Calibrated Tamper If…
- You don’t want a calibrated tamper: If you’re confident in your ability to press the same amount of hard every time you brew espresso, you can save money with a simple solid tamper. I love the heavy and solid Rattleware Tamper, which has a comfortable feel and classic design.
- You want an adjustable calibrated tamper: The latest edition of the spring loaded Normcore Tamper includes three interchangeable springs, allowing you to adjust the pressure to 15, 25, or 30 pounds. This is a great way to experiment with tamping force without sacrificing consistency.
- You run a coffee business: No matter how great the ergonomics of a tamper, you’re setting yourself up for a repetitive strain injury if you tamp espresso all day, every day. If you’re running a busy coffee shop, it is probably worth investing in an automatic tamper like the PuqPress. The upfront cost is high, but you’ll save money in the long run if you (or your employees) are healthy and happy enough to work.
The Verdict
The Espro Stainless Steel Espresso Tamper is an excellent tool for achieving consistently delicious espresso, whether you’re a home coffee lover or a professional barista. The factory-set calibration takes the guesswork out of tamping, freeing you to focus on mastering the rest of the espresso equation. While I have qualms about the Espro’s high price tag, they in no way detract from my high opinion of its performance and quality.
