The 5 Best Mugs with Smart Features in 2026
Smart coffee mugs vary in their complexity, functionality, and price. Here are five tried-and-tested options that run the gamut from simple heaters to app-controlled, variable-temperature coffee cups.
1. Ember Smart Mug 2
Material: Stainless steel with scratch-resistent coating
- Size: 10 oz, 14 oz
- Power supply: Charging pad + Li-ion battery
- Temperature: 120°F to 145°F
Ember was the first brand to introduce a smart self-heating mug, and while many reviewers (myself included) initially scoffed at their high prices, they were quickly proven wrong by rabid consumer demand. The Ember Mug offered a fantastic user experience that more than justified its price tag.
The Ember Mug 2, released in 2019, was an impressive update to the original, and five years later, it remains my favorite heated mug.
The Ember Mug 2 links to the Ember app, which gives you precise control of the temperature between 120°F and 145°F. It relies on a combination of sensors and microprocessors to ensure the temperature is maintained with minimal fluctuations. (If you’d rather not use the app, it defaults to 135°F.) The app can be programmed to alert you when the temp has been reached, and you can add presets for different drinks.

The biggest upgrade from the first generation is the auto-wake and sleep sensors. It starts heating automatically when it detects liquid and, more importantly, shuts down when empty – avoiding any burnt-on coffee residue.
I most often use the Ember Mug at my desk, where it lives on its charging coaster and will stay hot indefinitely. But if you prefer to roam, the battery life is impressive. You’ll get 90 minutes out of the 10-ounce version and about 80 minutes from the 14-ounce mug.

Note that there is also a travel mug version, the Ember Travel Mug 2, but I didn’t love it as much as the classic.
2. Nextmug Self-Heating Coffee Mug
Material: Stainless steel with ceramic coating
- Size: 14 oz, 18 oz
- Power supply: Charging pad + Li-ion battery
- Temperature: 130°F, 140°F, or 150°F
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so Ember should be flattered by the recent release of the Nextmug. Like the Ember, it’s a self-warming mug with variable temperature control and a charging coaster, and in my testing, the battery life was comparable between the two.

The Nextmug only offers three temperature settings – warm (130°F), hot (140°F), and piping (150°F) – and they’re set using a button on the mug rather than an app. There are pros and cons here, in my mind. You miss out on the detailed control of the app, but it’s nice to be able to operate your mug without your phone.
The Nextmug is available in two sizes, a standard 14-ounce model and the 18-ounce Nextmug Plus. Personally, I like dainty coffees, so I prefer the Ember sizing, but if you like your lattes large, the Nextmug is here for you.
3. Legardliliu Travel Mug
Material: Stainless steel with ceramic inner wall
- Size: 12 oz
- Power supply: Charging pad + polymer-Li battery
- Temperature: 95 to 149℉
I wasn’t initially sold on the idea of a self-heating travel mug. It struck me as an expensive solution to a problem no one had; after all, a decent insulated travel mug already keeps my hot coffee hot all day. I’m still somewhat of that mind, but I have come around to the idea of a variable temperature travel mug like this option from Lergardliliu.
While a standard travel mug might keep my coffee hot enough all day, it doesn’t provide the option to adjust the temperature for different drinks and different scenarios. I think that context is what makes this mug worthwhile.
The Legardliliu mug has the widest temperature range of any I tested, letting you set the temperature in 1-degree increments between 95 and 149 ℉. Off the charger, I got about 2.5 hours of battery life at the hottest setting, but the insulated mug design keeps your coffee hot much longer.
My favorite thing about this mug is that you can adjust the temperature either on the mug or with the app – a nice upgrade from both the Ember (app only) and Nextmug (mug only). You can also use the app to program a few other nice features, like setting on/off times.
The charging coaster can also work as a phone charger, which is a great little perk that definitely isn’t offered by a standard travel cup.
4. OHOM UI 3 Self-Heating Mug
Material: Ceramic
- Size: 12 oz
- Power supply: Electromagnetic charging pad
- Temperature: ~135°F
The OHOM UI Mug is arguably the least “smart” mug on the list because it lacks a battery and app connectivity. But I was so charmed by this innovative and gorgeous design that I couldn’t help but include it.
The UI 3 Mug looks and feels exactly like a standard ceramic mug, which immediately appealed to me. I love the simple ritual of a morning latte, and I don’t necessarily want to enjoy it from a cup with lights and buttons.

It uses electromagnetic energy to heat the coffee when it’s on the charging coaster, thanks to metallic particles embedded undetectably in the ceramic material. The upsides to this system are that it is far more environmentally friendly, longer-lasting, aesthetically pleasing, and dishwasher safe.
The major downside, of course, is that it doesn’t maintain heat off its coaster – though it does come with an equally lovely ceramic lid. For this reason, I’d say a desk-bound office worker is an ideal candidate for the OHOM mug, particularly given that its charging coaster also charges your phone.
My main complaint about this mug is that you don’t get any control over the temperature. It settles around 135 ℉, which is a nice enough happy medium for a hot beverage. But it won’t appeal to everyone.
5. Civexa Self-Heating Mug Set
Material: Stainless steel
- Size: 14 oz
- Power supply: Charging pad + battery
- Temperature: 120°F to 160°F
I generally have low expectations of these off-brand knock-off products on Amazon. I’ve certainly tested a lot of duds in my time. But the Civexa Heated Coffee Mug actually delivers on its promises and, in some ways, even outperforms some of the higher-cost alternatives.
The Civexa mug is clearly an Ember imitator, but I think it actually improves on the concept. Although, admittedly, it is less sleek and attractive.
It has an impressively wide temperature range, from 120°F to 160°F, which you can adjust with or without the app.
This mug gets the warmest of any I tested, so it’s certainly the best option for anyone who likes their coffee piping hot.
The marketing materials claim a 3-second heat-up time, which I can’t say held up in my testing, but it did heat faster than any of the others.
The app provides access to a few other nice features as well. You can set presets for different coffee and tea drinks and adjust the auto shut-off between 5 minutes and 12 hours. I like that it vibrates confirmation each time a setting is changed.
Smart Mugs Vs Mug Warmers
There is a lot of overlap online between smart mugs, self-heating mugs, and mug warmers, so I felt the need to draw some sort of line in the sand when choosing products for this round-up.
For the sake of this article, a smart mug has to have some sort of heating system built into the mug itself. This provides a more even heat than a mug warmer, which is little more than a mini version of the hot plate on a drip coffee maker.
Ideally, to quality as “smart,” the mug should also have an associated app, but I set that limitation aside for this set of reviews as there simply aren’t enough high-quality app-enabled mugs (1).
With that definition out of the way, let’s talk about choosing the perfect mug for you.
How To Choose The Best Self-Heating Coffee Mug
Do you really need an electric coffee mug? Admittedly, it’s an expensive way to serve coffee, but if you like to sip and savor your morning brew, it’s well worth it. Don’t be tempted to microwave coffee for reheating!
I find self-heating mugs particularly useful when enjoying a milk-based drink like a latte or cappuccino – cases where a thermos or travel mug would ruin the drink’s frothy surface.
If you’ve decided a smart coffee mug is right for you, here are some key things to consider before purchasing.
Do You Require Portability?
Not all mugs are built for the road. If you’re looking for something for the morning commute, choose a mug with a lid, check that it fits your car’s cup holder, and ensure the battery life is enough to get where you’re going. If you simply want a mug to take on a stroll, perhaps out to the balcony, you have a bit more flexibility, but I’d still suggest an option that comes with a lid.
For longer-term or off-grid travel, a self-heating mug probably isn’t the best choice. In that case, stick with a classic vacuum insulated travel mug or a high-quality coffee thermos.
Match The Battery Life To Your Lifestyle
Once the mug leaves its charger pad or power supply, it relies on battery power and any insulating properties to keep your coffee warm. Most of the mugs I tested for this article had a fairly similar battery life, ranging from about 1 to 3 hours, depending on the temperature setting and whether or not you add a lid.
What Temperature Do You Like Your Coffee?
This is perhaps the most important consideration if you’re a coffee lover. While the ideal temperature for brewing coffee is largely agreed upon among specialty coffee drinkers, the perfect serving temperature is more a matter of personal taste.
Fans of complex and subtle specialty single origins tend to favor a lower serving temperature around 120°F, while many coffee shops catering to a broader audience opt for a slightly toastier 130 to 140°F. Additionally, different temperatures can highlight different flavor notes (2).
At a minimum, look for a mug that offers the serving temperature you prefer. Consider upgrading to a model with variable temperature control if you plan to be more experimental with your brews.
The Verdict
There’s nothing worse than emerging from a busy morning to a cup of cold coffee sitting in a normal mug. How did you manage to forget about that lovely warm brew you prepared? Spare yourself that heartache with one of the warming mugs on this list!
My top pick to keep drinks hot for a long time is still the OG, the Ember Smart Mug 2. While I regret that it requires an app for full functionality, its fantastic temperature control and sleek good looks still make it a winner in my books.
FAQs
The best temperature for brewing coffee is between 195 and 205°F (3). If you don’t have a variable temperature kettle or thermometer, a good way to estimate this temperature is leave your water to cool for 30-45 seconds after boiling.
The best drinking temperature for coffee is more a matter of personal taste. It ranges between about 120 to 150°F.
The best coffee mug warmer is the one that suits your needs and your budget. My top pick this year is the Bestinnkits Smart Coffee Mug Warmer, a simple and reliable device with a gravity induction switch that turns on automatically when it senses your mug.
You can’t put any mug on a mug warmer, but you can put most regular mugs. Double-check the details of your coffee warmer before you buy. Most work with ceramic, enamel, glass, and stainless steel mugs, but I’d definitely steer clear of plastic.
The Civexa coffee mug kept my coffee the hottest of any on this list, maintaining a full mug of coffee at 160 °F for over an hour off its coaster. However, to keep coffee or tea hotter for longer, I’d recommend looking into a good coffee thermos. One with double-wall vacuum insulation and a leakproof lid should keep your hot drink hot for at least 12 hours (4).
