Best Overall

1. Nespresso VertuoPlus

  • Coffee type: Espresso, coffee

  • Brews with: Nespresso Vertuo capsules
  • Drink sizes: 0.85, 1.35, 2.70, 5, 8 oz
  • Water tank: 40 oz

Nespresso launched the VertuoLine in 2014 to cater to the North American market, where preferences tend more toward coffee than espresso (1). A decade later, we can safely say it has been a resounding success.

The VertuoPlus offers five drink sizes, from a 0.85-ounce ristretto to an 8-ounce coffee. Rather than the typical Nespresso pressurized extraction, it uses a patented technology known as Centrifusion. Hot water is injected into the capsule, which is then spun at 7000 rpm.

The resulting coffee is much richer and more flavorful than a typical drip brew and is even capped by a nice crema layer, reminding me of an Americano.

Perhaps my favorite thing about the Vertuo machines is that they increase functionality without sacrificing simplicity. No matter what you want to brew, it only takes the push of a button. The brewing information is all encoded on the capsule; the VertuoPlus reads the barcode and automatically optimizes brewing parameters for that specific coffee.

The only downside is that you must use the proprietary Vertuo capsules, which can be expensive. However, at least part of their expense is because they contain more coffee; it’s not just that they’re novel or high-tech.

Best For Coffee

2. Keurig K-Supreme

  • Coffee type: Coffee

  • Brews with: K-Cups
  • Drink sizes: 6, 8, 10, 12 oz
  • Water tank: 66 oz

No products found.

The Keurig K-Supreme is my pick if you favor drip coffee over espresso. The main reason this one tops my list of coffee brewers is the new Multistream technology. While I still prefer freshly ground beans to anything packed in a K-Cup, there is no denying this innovation is a definite improvement.

Overhead view of the Keurig K Supreme

The Multistream system punches five holes in the K-Cup lid, rather than just one. The result is much better saturation of the grounds inside and thus a more even and flavorful extraction (2). It’s the Keurig equivalent of a showerhead-style water outlet in the best traditional drip coffee machines.

An even extraction reduces the amount of generic, boring extraction taints and replaces them with delicious, sweet, complex and ideal extraction flavours.

The base model K-Supreme offers the best value for money, in my opinion. You get four drink size options, an Over Ice setting, and a Strong brew mode. The K-Supreme Plus doesn’t add much, and while the K-Supreme Plus Smart is a much fancier brewer, with Wifi connectivity and adjustable brew temp, it costs substantially more.

Best For Espresso

3. Nespresso Pixie

  • Coffee type: Coffee

  • Brews with: K-Cups, ground coffee
  • Drink sizes: 12-cup carafe, up to 14 oz single serve
  • Water tank: 60 oz and 14 oz

The Nespresso Pixie is a longtime best-selling model, and I’m inclined to agree with the masses. It’s my personal favorite Nespresso machine and is on Home Brews Coffee’ best coffee makers list

The Pixie has everything I need with no extras, keeping it affordable and compact without sacrificing the best espresso quality.

At just 4 inches wide, it’s among the tiniest pod brewers, but that doesn’t impact its performance or ease of use. It still includes two drink options (single espresso shot or lungo), a 19-bar pump for a rich and flavorful extraction, and a surprisingly large 24-ounce water reservoir. It doesn’t skimp on build quality either, with plenty of stainless steel components inside and out.

The Pixie is virtually foolproof to operate. It heats up in less than 30 seconds and powers down automatically after 9 minutes of inactivity. The feature I most appreciated was the light that lets you know the water tank is running low. I found I had to refill it so infrequently that it always caught me by surprise.

Best Dual Brewer

4. Hamilton Beach FlexBrew

  • Dimensions: 4.3” W x 9.3” H x 12.8” D

  • Brews with: Capsules
  • Drink sizes available: 1.35 oz and 3.7 oz
  • Water reservoir size: 24 oz

The Hamilton Beach Flexbrew stands out as the only machine on this list that can brew a full carafe of coffee or a single serving. It packs that dual functionality into a surprisingly compact machine.

I’ve always thought the FlexBrew series looks like it hasn’t been updated since the 1980s, but rest assured that appearances are deceiving in this case. The brewing technology is fully up to date.

You can brew a single serving using either K Cup pods or freshly ground coffee beans, and I love having the option of both. I enjoy fresh coffee grounds most of the time but keep a few K-Cups on hand for guests or busy mornings.

Compared to the My K-Cup refillable pod from Keurig, the FlexBrew’s single-serve filter is less awkward to use and holds way more coffee. In fact, you can brew up to 14 ounces with ground beans compared to only 10 ounces with a pod.

The carafe side is a simple programmable coffee maker with the features you expect, like a Bold brew setting, warming plate, timer, and pause-and-serve.

Most Versatile

5. Keurig K-Cafe Smart

  • Coffee type: Espresso, coffee, milky drinks

  • Brews with: K-Cups
  • Drink sizes: 6, 8, 10, 12 oz + espresso shots
  • Water tank: 60 oz

No products found.

The Keurig K-Café Smart is an all-in-one machine for lovers of coffee, espresso, and milky drinks. While I had fewer favorable things to say about the first-generation K-Cafe, the newer models, including this Smart version, represent a significant advancement – including offering the Multistream technology I already praised in the K-Supreme.

I won’t claim that the shots produced by this machine approach true espresso; the full body simply isn’t there. But they’re strong and flavorful and make a fine basis for a creamy latte.

Even with my qualms about the “espresso,” no other coffee pod machine can match the versatility of the K-Cafe Smart. Not only does it make coffee, iced coffee, espresso, lattes, and cappuccinos (thanks to a built-in milk frother), but it allows unparalleled customizability of all of the above with five coffee brew strength settings and six brew temperatures.

It connects via WiFi to the Keurig app, which adds a ton of functionality, such as step-by-step brewing guides, the ability to create and save custom recipes, and even automatic K-Cup reordering.

Best For Lattes And Cappuccinos

6. Nespresso Creatista Plus

  • Coffee type: Espresso, milky drinks

  • Brews with: Nespresso Original capsules
  • Drink sizes: 0.85, 1.35, 3.7 oz + milk drinks
  • Water tank: 50.7 oz

No products found.

The Creatista is the most expensive brewer on our list, but it has the most to offer for lovers of milk-based drinks. The K-Cafe makes a latte, but the Creatista makes a vastly better latte, if I’m being honest.

There is just no substitute for a real steam wand for making perfectly frothed milk, whether that’s creamy microfoam for a latte or airy froth for a cappuccino (3).

Steam doesn’t just add air and heat the milk; the force of the steam jets moves the milk in the pitcher.

That’s what the Creatista offers that no other machine on this list – or, indeed, on the market – can match.

The automatic steam wand is paired with the traditional Nespresso extraction system to offer six specialty drinks: ristretto, espresso, lungo, latte, cappuccino, and latte macchiato. A digital color display makes it easy to select and customize your drink, though I find its location on the top of the machine a little awkward.

Finally, I have to mention the gorgeous design. I don’t often describe pod machines as eye-catching, but it’s hard not to be drawn to the Creatista, with its rich medley of polished and brushed stainless steel. It definitely looks more like a high-end Breville espresso maker than a simple pod brewer.

Best Budget Pick

7. Chulux Mini Single Serve Brewer

  • Coffee type: Coffee

  • Brews with: K-Cups, ground coffee
  • Drink sizes: 5 – 12 oz
  • Water tank: 12 ounces

No products found.

Given its low cost, I did not expect much from the Chulux Mini. In fact, after testing a number of its competitors, I had almost given up finding anything decent at this price point. But this little single cup coffee maker swooped in to save the day – and your bank balance.

The tiniest machine on this list, the well-named Chulux Mini is perfect for a coffee drinker confined to a dorm room, RV, or office cubicle. It takes about 3 minutes to heat up and brew coffee using a K-Cup or the included reusable pod filter. And unlike most other cheap brewers I tested, the coffee it makes is actually hot.

Its small size is facilitated by its single-use 12-ounce water reservoir. You add as much water as you want coffee, and the machine brews until the tank is empty. I actually like this solution, which provides more flexibility versus buttons for different cup sizes, but it does mean you need to refill the tank every time.

How To Find The Best Pod Coffee Maker

The best capsule coffee maker makes great-tasting cups of coffee at a reasonable price, and above all, it’s convenient and easy to use. How do you find this perfect brewer? Keep reading, and I’ll walk you through it.

How Do You Like Your Coffee?

Pod coffee makers can be broadly divided into two categories: drip coffee makers and espresso machines. Keurig models and Keurig alternatives typify the former market, while Nespresso, Tassimo, and their branded capsules dominate the latter.

Luckily, if you want the flexibility to drink either coffee or espresso, you don’t necessarily need to buy two coffee makers. The Nespresso Vertuo line and the Keurig K-Cafe are designed to cater to lovers of both types of coffee.

Is Keurig or Nespresso better?

I get this question all the time, and the answer really comes down to your preferences. Nespresso is better if you prefer espresso; Keurig is better if you prefer regular coffee.

The coffee or espresso flavor is largely dictated by the quality of the coffee pod, so always buy the best quality coffee pods you can afford.

In my experience, Nespresso machines tend to be more compact, have better build quality, and last longer. Keurig machines have a cheaper build but have more features like coffee strength and brew temperature control.

Do You Enjoy Milky Drinks Like Lattes And Cappuccinos?

Pod machines are a great option for lovers of milk-based drinks because the quality of espresso is less important.

If you enjoy a frothy coffee every day, opt for a machine with a built-in frother, like the Creatista or K-Cafe. On the other hand, if you only rarely indulge in a latte, consider buying a separate milk frother instead. Both Keurig and Nespresso offer a standalone milk frother at a discount if you bundle it with one of their machines.

How Much Counter Space Do You Have?

You don’t want to buy a pod coffee brewer only to realize that it won’t fit your space, particularly given their popularity for non-traditional brewing locations like RVs, dorm rooms, or offices.

These single serve machines tend to be quite compact because they don’t need a large filter basket or carafe, but each additional feature increases the machine’s footprint. Think about where you plan to fit your pod machine when deciding if these add-ons are worthwhile. For example, a big water tank increases the overall size of a coffee maker, but that may be advantageous for large households or offices because it won’t need constant refilling.

If counter space is a top consideration, you can also check out my list of the best compact coffee makers.

The Verdict

What’s the best pod coffee maker? Like I’ve said before, the best machine is the one that suits your lifestyle and taste, and I would vouch for any of the options on this list.

My overall favorite coffee pod brewer this year is the Nespresso VertuoPlus, which combines versatility, build quality, and a reasonable price point. It’s the only pod machine I’ve tested that serves coffee and espresso lovers equally, and bundling it with an Aeroccino frother opens up the world of cafe-style specialty drinks.

FAQs

The best coffee pods are the ones that taste best to you. I like to look for pods from quality roasters that roast in small batches and grind and pack their pods to order. After all, a great coffee pod must start with great coffee (4). Mass-produced capsules don’t receive the same attention from a skilled roaster and often contain stale grounds. From an environmental standpoint, compostable pods are the best option.

The best drip coffee maker on the market now, in my opinion, remains the Technivorm Moccamaster. Long a staple among specialty coffee geeks, it brews reliably fantastic coffee without any bells and whistles. If that’s not your cup of tea, I’d recommend looking through the list of SCA-certified home brewers for an equally high-end alternative.

There are several key differences between Nespresso coffee capsules and K cups. First, aluminum Nespresso capsules are designed to burst when pumped full of pressurized hot water, producing a full-bodied espresso shot. In contrast, plastic K cups are designed to be punctured at the top and bottom so water can flow through, making a drip coffee. Second, Nespresso capsules contain less ground coffee than K cups but are brewed with a much higher coffee-to-water ratio, so the resulting shot is stronger. Finally, all Nespresso pods are recyclable, which is not the case for K-cups in many areas (5).
