1. House Gem Mug Warmer

  • Size (HxWxD): 1.21” x 5.91” x 5.91”

  • Temperature: 130, 150, and 175 ℉
  • Wattage: 36 W
  • Cord length: 59”

I didn’t expect an Amazon purchase from a brand I’d never heard of to top this list, but the results don’t lie. Not only did the House Gem Mug Warmer keep drinks hot, but it was easy to use, looked stylish on my desk, and came at a very reasonable price. It’s hard to argue with that combination.

There are three temperature settings – high, medium, and low – which correspond to roughly 130 ℉, 150 ℉, and 175 ℉. The medium setting was just right for me, but specialty coffee fans will appreciate the low, and those who like their coffee piping hot will be happy with the high option.

The standout feature of this mug warmer, in my opinion, is the adjustable auto-off, an unexpected perk at this price.

It turns off after 4 hours by default, but you can customize it for a set amount of time from 2 to 12 hours. It’s ideal for tailoring to your routine.

At roughly 6 inches on a side, it’s a fairly large mug warmer, so you’ll want to have space on your desk. But it’s nice for accommodating larger mugs or even small carafes or soup bowls. It’s available in a black, white, or fake wood finish, and a gentle red light at the base lets you know it’s on.

Runner Up

2. OHOM Ui 3 Self-Heating Mug

  • Size (HxWxD): 3.75” x 4.5” x 4.5”

  • Temperature: ~135 ℉
  • Wattage: 22 W
  • Cord length: 72”

With the continuing success of the Ember mug, we were bound to see a competitor mug eventually. Enter the OHOM Ui 3 self-heating mug, which in some respects I like even more than the Ember – and not just because it’s less expensive.

The coolest thing about the 12-ounce Ui 3 is that it looks and feels just like an artisan-made ceramic mug. It’s the opposite vibe of the sleek and high-tech-feeling Ember. If it’s not on its charging coaster, you’d never guess at the technology within, and it comes in a lovely assortment of six muted colors. My favorites are the deep navy and rosy apricot.

The downside of the OHOM Ui mug is that you can’t set the temperature of the liquid. I found it kept my coffee around 135 ℉, which I was happy with. But you’ll be disappointed if you’re hoping for piping hot.

The other thing to know about the OHOM is it uses electromagnetic energy. There are metallic particles embedded in the ceramic material rather than batteries. While this is nice from a sustainability standpoint (and it makes this mug dishwasher-safe!), it means your coffee doesn’t stay hot for long once it’s away from its base – though it does come with a lid.

A final neat perk is that the charging pad is multipurpose. When you’re not using it for your mug, it can charge your cellphone or wireless headphones.

Most Practical

3. Cosori Mug Warmer And Mug Set

  • Size (HxWxD): 0.7” x 4.3” x 5.4”

  • Temperature: 77 to 158 ℉
  • Wattage: 24 W
  • Cord length: 61”

The Cosori Mug Warmer Set has a bit of everything. I didn’t know whether to highlight its durability, custom temperature control, included stainless steel mug, elegant gift box, or reasonable price point. So I awarded it “Most Practical” because I think it offers something for everyone.

Let’s talk durability first. The Cosori mug warmer is stainless steel and spill-proof, so it’s sure to outlast any plastic or glass model, even if you’re the clumsy type.

What about temperature control? The Cosori lets you set any temperature between 77 to 230 ℉ to 1 degree of precision, which translates to about 77 to 160 ℉ in the cup. And unlike most of the products on this list, it’s easy to toggle between Celcius and Fahrenheit. As a Canadian reviewer, I was especially charmed by this feature.

Lastly, there’s the included mug. You can buy the mug warmer on its own if you already have a favorite mug, but the mug-and-warmer bundle is great value, thanks to the quality of the mug. It’s high-end steel with a heatproof wrap and handle. However, it’s not a double-wall insulated travel mug – after all, that would defeat the purpose of the warmer.

The price? Under $40. Talk about a practical solution to your hot coffee needs.

Great For Gifts

4. KitchekShop Coffee Mug Warmer

  • Size (HxWxD): 1” x 5.9” x 5.9”

  • Temperature: 131, 145, 167, 185 °F
  • Wattage: 40 W
  • Cord length: 59”

The KitchekShop Coffee Warmer is a bit of a gimmick, which makes it the perfect gift for the coffee lover in your life who has everything.

It has four temperature settings, including a smoking hot 185 °F, and each one comes with its own little light show thanks to LEDs built into the external ring.

It’s fun and silly but also useful; the lights correspond to the temperature. It glows green for the coolest, blue for medium, red for hot, and a 7-color party cycle for extra hot.

Now, I can’t in good conscience recommend that you heat your coffee to 185 °F, which is hot enough to actually scald milk. But I’ve found the highest setting is great for other things, like soup or hot chocolate, and the wide heating surface accommodates all sizes of mugs and bowls.

The KitchekShop warmer uses a gravity sensor to turn on and off automatically when you place or remove your mug – plus an 8-hour auto shut-off as an added safety feature. Though I will warn you that if you leave a mostly empty cup of coffee on a heating pad for 8 hours, you’re coming back to a caked-on coffee mess at the bottom of the mug regardless.

Best Heated Mug

5. Ember Mug 2

  • Size (HxWxD): 5” x 6” x 4.41″

  • Temperature: 120° – 145 °F
  • Wattage: 32 W
  • Cord length: 72”

I remember when the Ember Mug was first released, and I scoffed. “No one will spend $100+ on a coffee cup,” I said. I have since eaten my words and, if I’m honest, bought my own Ember mug. Is it a luxury item? Yes. It is worth it? Also yes.

The Ember Mug 2 connects to an app with which you can set any temperature between 120° and 145 °F – a clear indication it was designed for coffee geeks. It stays hot forever with the mug on the charger. Otherwise, the battery life gets you about an hour and a half of walking around time.

My favorite thing about the Ember is the automatic on and off. When you pour in a hot liquid, it turns on automatically. Likewise, it detects when your mug is empty and shuts down. My least favorite thing is that you need the app to control the temperature. If you’d rather not use your phone, you’re relegated to 135 °F.

The Ember Mug 2 comes in two sizes – 10 ounces and 14 ounces – and an assortment of colors and finishes. The metallic series is a bit pricier, but it’s hard not to be tempted by its beauty.

While you definitely don’t want to put this mug in the dishwasher, it is rated safe to submerge in water up to a meter, and the surfaces are impressively durable. So feel free to handwash with abandon.

Budget Pick

6. Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer

  • Size (HxWxD): 1.5” x 5.2” x 8.6”

  • Temperature: 160 ℉
  • Wattage: 17 W
  • Cord length: 67”

The Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer offers an excellent combination of function and value. It’s simple and durable, costs less than $20, and will keep your beverage hot as long as you want.

This mug warmer is cheap because it doesn’t offer any features, which in my opinion, is much better than something that’s cheap because it’s poorly made. In fact, the Mr. Coffee Coffee Warmer is incredibly reliable. The lack of features makes it easy to use and leaves little to go wrong. Just plug it in.

It’s not temperature adjustable, which is probably the biggest trade-off relative to the more expensive models, and it runs relatively hot. I measured the temperature of my coffee at 160 ℉ after an hour. There’s no auto-off function, which is a downside for busy multi-taskers, but I found the obvious indicator light to be a helpful reminder that it was on.

It’s important to note that the inset warming plate is only 3.25” in diameter, so it’s best for smaller mugs. However, the cord is a longer-than-average 67”, which is handy if you don’t have a well-placed outlet.

How To Choose The Best Mug Warmer For Your Coffee

If you’re someone who likes to sip and savor every drop of a hot drink, finding the right mug warmer is a must. Microwaving coffee is not a good solution if you care about your coffee’s flavor, I assure you.

Mug warmers are pretty simple, but there are a few key features you can use to track down the right model for you. Let’s talk about the essential specifications to consider.

What’s The Difference Between Heated Mugs And Mug Warmers?

A mug warmer is essentially a small hot plate you plug into a wall and set a traditional mug atop. Think of it like a heated coaster for keeping coffee hot.

A heated mug is a mug with an integrated heating element. It also comes with something resembling a coaster, but in this case, the pad is simply the charger for the electric mug; it doesn’t heat.

A heated mug typically provides a much more gentle and well-distributed heat, making it a better choice for specialty coffee drinkers. Plus, you can move around with your coffee without it cooling down – perfect for savoring a morning cappuccino out on the balcony.

On the other hand, self-heating mugs are much more expensive than simple mug warmers, and they can be annoying to clean because the in-built electronics make the dishwasher off-limits.

How Hot Do You Like Your Coffee?

We all agree on the best temperature for brewing coffee, but everyone has their own opinions regarding drinking temperature. Always look for a mug heater with a temperature range that meets your needs.

Specialty coffee geeks tend to advocate for lower temperatures, in the 120 – 140 ℉ range (1).

Coffee’s notes shine between 120°F and 140°F. The subtle flavors noted by the roaster will come out within this range, creating a delightful cup.

If you’re used to a drip coffee maker or a standard coffee shop brew, you’ll probably be happy with 140 – 160 ℉. If you like your coffee piping hot, look for a mug warmer you can crank up to 170 ℉ or above.

If the temperature isn’t specified, remember that higher wattage yields higher temperatures. If you’ll use your warmer for different drinks, like coffee and tea, consider one with adjustable temperature control.

Do You Require An Auto Shut-Off?

If you’re a busy multi-tasker, avoid adding one more thing to the list and invest in an automatic mug warmer. Some models use gravity induction to sense your mug’s weight, while others use the more basic automatic shutoff timer system. Either way, it’s worth paying a few extra bucks for peace of mind.

Don’t Forget To Match Your Mug Warmer To Your Mug

Make sure your favorite mug is compatible with your mug warmer before you buy – unless you’re choosing a self-heating smart coffee mug. The most important thing to check is that the hot plate’s diameter is large enough, particularly if it’s inset.

Can I use any mug with a mug warmer?

The mug’s material also matters. Some mug warmers are only compatible with glass and ceramic, while others also work with stainless steel. None work with plastic, but I don’t recommend drinking coffee from a plastic mug anyway (2).

The Verdict

This year, my top coffee cup warmer is the House Gem Mug Warmer, which perfectly blends value and functionality. With three temperature settings, a programmable automatic shut-off, and a large warming surface, it’s sure to satisfy any coffee lover.

FAQs

A mug warmer is worth it if you’re someone who likes to savor their coffee – or who gets easily distracted and forgets about their cup of joe while it cools. They’re an easy and inexpensive solution to a common problem. I find them especially valuable when I’m enjoying frothy drinks, which simply aren’t the same when sipped through the lid of a travel mug.

Double-wall vacuum-insulated mugs with leakproof lids hold heat the best. This is the construction used for all the best travel mugs. Among standard single-wall coffee mugs, ceramic and porcelain offer better heat retention than glass, metal, or plastic (3).

You can use a candle warmer as a mug warmer if it is the correct size, shape, and temperature. You’ll need to look for a candle warmer with a flat heating plate that’s large enough to accommodate your mug and won’t over- or under-heat your brew. Similarly, many mug warmers can be used as candle warmers.
